“In Kansas City, where barbecue is a way of life, it is understood that smoke has mystical properties. Smoke has the power to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary. It can transform the least desirable cuts of meat into the most delectable. It can even transform a neighborhood corner gas station into one of the most popular restaurants on the planet.” https://www.joeskc.com/pages/our-story
That’s what we experienced as we traveled through Kansas City, Missouri and into Kansas City, Kansas, U.S.A.
Joe’s Original Gas Station Restaurant is an interesting blend of a gas station with popular barbecue (or is it bar-b-que), located at the corner of 47th & Mission in Kansas City, Kansas. We had to try it while traveling through the area since it is a popular spot.
We arrived around 2 p.m. on a weekday and had to look for a parking spot. There was a continuous line outside the gas station/restaurant and guess what? They were not there for gas.
The line for the famous barbecue remained constant. We waited for over an hour.
Although I am not the one to wait very long for food, I must admit – the wait was worth it.
So, if you travel through Kansas City, why not take an extra two hours and enjoy some excellent food at Joe’s. They are closed on Sundays though.
By the way, you decide whether it should be spelled bar-b-que, barbecue or BBQ. The taste is the same. 🙂
Blessings!
Ron
A BBQ tour has long been on my list
That’s what it seemed for us – going to the popular BBQ or burger places topped off with the bakeries. 🙂
Can’t beat that.
I actually have been there! It was definitely worth the stop
Fantastic. You probably had to wait in line too. 🙂
Definitely lol.
My daughter and son in law went to grad school at KU and my husband went to kindergarten in Lawrence, so we all over the magic smoke.
I can imagine. That’s good to know. That’s a wonderful area too. 🙂
